Tarek Ashkar was born in Alexandria, Egypt and grew up in Springfield, Missouri as well as in Tunis, Tunisia and Dacca Bangladesh. He is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover and the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Masters in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and moved to New York in 1978.
Along with his work as a designer he has pursued a parallel path as a painter studying both overseas and in New York at the Art Students' League, the New York Academy of Art, and the National Academy of Design. That path has led him to portraiture and over the course of the last five years he has completed a number of commissioned portraits in both full color and grisaille.
